How the Quantum Draw & Brodex Work

Every five minutes, the server requests 8 fresh uint8 integers (0–255) from the Australian National University quantum random-number lab in Canberra, which measures quantum vacuum fluctuations in real time. If the lab is rate-limited or unreachable, the desk skips the draw rather than falling back to a pseudo-random generator.

The path

How eight bytes walk the Brodex

Think of the Brodex as a map with eight houses. A draw is eight steps around that map. You can read the houses and tokens without the bit math — the lab supplies the numbers; the Brodex only names what those numbers already chose.

8 STEPSthrough the housesThreshold00Vigil01Labor02Release03Table04Road05Lamp06Open hand07
Clockwise from Threshold. Each step lands in one house.
  1. Eight numbers arrive from the Canberra quantum lab.
  2. Each number takes one step and enters one of the eight houses.
  3. That house hands the step a figure, a gesture, and a question.
  4. Shared shelves add an offer, a relation, a material, a constraint, an hour, and a weather.
  5. An earlier step can send a later one into a different house than it would have entered alone.

How the 8 bytes choose a house (bit math)

Specification entropy-path-v1 in entropy/path.py. The public atlas above names all 289 tokens; this block is the lookup only.

  1. Bit slicing: Each byte b ∈ [0, 255] splits into high 3 bits base_house = b >> 5 (0..7) and low 5 bits card = b & 31 (0..31).
  2. Path phase: Step 0 starts at phase = 0, bearing = 0. At step s, the active house is house_index = (base_house + phase) % 8. Changing an earlier byte redirects later steps.
  3. Bearing & next phase: bearing = (bearing + b * (phase + 1)) % 256 and phase = (phase + (b & 7) + 1) % 8.
  4. Facet lookup: From (house_index, card) the Brodex selects a Figure (card % 8), Gesture ((card // 4) % 8), Question (card % 8), Offer ((house_index * 3 + card) % 16), Relation ((house_index + card) % 16), Material (card % 16), Constraint ((card // 4) % 8), Hour (card % 8), and Weather ((house_index + card // 4) % 8).
  5. AI synthesis: A local reasoning model (localmoe · Qwen3-30B or localchat · Qwen3-14B) reads the 8-step matrix against the active story chapter — weighing Tyler’s dilemma over Brayden’s $100, the $50 sent to Jo, and the remaining $50.
